Workshop - Magnolia in Chinese Brush Painting, and Spring in Chinese Calligraphy

You will be learning how to paint magnolia with Chinese ink and pigments on Xuan rice paper in this workshop.  彩墨玉蘭，春字的書法

Time : 14:00-16:00 pm Sunday 26th March. 2023

Venue: At the stylish & cosy Hoogly Tea Lodge, 11 South Rd. BN1 6SB, Brighton  (free off road parking at bottom of Preston Drove for up to 4 hours within 1min walking distance)  

-Cost : £25 per person, All materials included, and a lovely pot of Hoogly yummy blend tea included, choose from over 35 types of blend teas including some luxurious Chinese teas. Bring your own tools at £20 per person, you can choose the options at the check out.

Suitable for beginners & intermediate.

For the workshop, you don't need any previous experience, I will demonstrate and show you step by step:

• How to hold a Chinese bamboo brush, and make 5 shades of grey from the natural ink
• Write/Paint in one stoke having different grey shades 
• How to load 3 colours in one brush 
• Use the stoke skills to paint magnolia petals, buds，stamens，branches  
• To write Spring in ancient script Lishu 

1. magnolia in colours;  2. Calligraphy the character love 春 Chun；3. painting a bird in ink and colours

Jing will guide you to learn the skills, then demo two types of magnolia, the birds, and the ancient calligraphy character for Spring 春. 

After practice, you can choose to do one, two or all of them as your complete artwork. Or you could be creative and to design and paint your own one.

Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, this can be a truly meditative experience as you become absorbed in the flow of the ink. Perhaps you'll be inspired to carry on learning more of these ancient skills. 

Tools & Materials needed:

Your own tools to bring if you have:

1. At least 3 brushes, one big brush with wolf hair or mixed hair for the calligraphy, one median ideally sheep hair for painting, one small firm brush with wolf hair for  painting the fine lines such as the blossom stamens;

2. A palette or a small white plate for making 5 grey shades

3. A small white plate for mixing colours 

3. Two jugs for washing your brushes, one for ink brush and one for colour brush

4. Chinese pigments at least rouge, red, white, yellow & indigo  

5. A brush rest if you have one

7. A small ink dish

8. Seal stamps
