Chinese brush painting created by me in Brighton, UK. This is one painting from my new series, a combination of Pomo style and Gongbi meticulous fine brush strokes.
Pomo 潑墨, or Splashing Ink, refers to a technique that involves working wet in wet, where watercolor and ink are thrown or poured onto rice paper, pre-mounted board, or shikishi board. The painting is then completed using traditional brushwork. The concept of 'Splashed ink' is generally associated with the eccentrics of the later Tang dynasty and with some Zen artists of the 13th century. It gained popularity through the works of Zhang Daqian 張大千 (1899-1983).
I really enjoy painting with Chinese colors because they are made from either mineral or plant-based pigments. It’s so satisfying when the ink and natural colors land on Xuan rice paper.

The Lotus flower has a deep symbolic meaning of purity, rebirth, and eternity in Chinese culture. There is a famous saying from Song dynasty scholar: 出污泥而不染, which means "Growing out of mud, the lotus blooms pure and untainted."
