This Chinese brush painting (sumi-e) was inspired by the lotus flowers I encountered at a temple during my last visit to my hometown. In ancient culture, lotus flowers are closely associated with Buddhism. Although I am not a Buddhist, I grew up surrounded by its philosophy, especially influenced by my sister’s nanny, who was a monk. Visiting her courtyard house, I always felt the calmness and kindness inherent in the Buddhist lifestyle.
Artistic Inspiration:
Calligraphy in Gold Ink: I've incorporated my reflections on Buddhist Zen in Clerical-Standard script:
一念心清淨，蓮花亭亭開。一花一淨土，一土一如來。靜，恍然，心似蓮花開。生而為人，一生一世，生命充滿偶然和變數。蓮自心中生，心似蓮花開。自當常澆灌，馨香滿歸途。
Translation in English:
“With each pure thought, the lotus blooms gracefully. Each flower represents a pure land, each land embodies a Rulai, Tathagata. Serene and tranquil, the heart unfolds like a lotus. Born into human life, one lifetime, filled with contingencies and uncertainties. The lotus arises from within the heart, the heart blossoms like a lotus. It requires constant nurturing, filling the journey home with fragrance."
Details:
- Medium: Chinese ink, mineral pigments, and gold ink on double untreated Xuan rice paper (生宣)
- Signature: Signed, dated, and stamped with my carved stone seals. Two on the left side bear my first name and surname, the one on top represents meditation, and the one on the right-hand side conveys best wishes.
- Studio: Painted in my home studio in Fiveways Brighton, Plum Blossom Studio.
- Exhibition: Created for the Brighton Artists Open House exhibition (AOH).

Exhibition History: This work is currently displayed at Venue 1, Jane Palmer and Friends, in Fiveways Trail as part of the AOH artists exhibition during the Brighton Festival. It garnered much attention and is now available for purchase.
