Description:
Plantain and Rock with Echoing Zither Guqin"
This is an ink painting and calligraphy on Xuan paper mounted on silk scroll, inspired by Wen Zhengming's Ming dynasty work of the same title. It embodies my enduring passion for the art of the Guqin and the aesthetic of scholar painting. Like ink painting, the Guqin expresses the realm of existence and void through silent language; the brushstrokes seem to resonate with its clear and distant tones. The two arts reflect and enhance each other, weaving a profound expression in stillness.
The calligraphy in the work is excerpts from Ji Kang's "Rhapsody on the Zither/Qin," composed during the height of Wei-Jin metaphysics. It integrates his aesthetic concept that "music has neither sorrow nor joy" with natural philosophy, using the qin to explore the nature of music and self-cultivation.
This piece pays homage to Wen Zhengming’s refined spirit while also drawing from insights gained since I began studying the guqin in 2018. Exchanges and shared practice with fellow members of the London Youlan Qin Society have deepened my appreciation of the intrinsic connection between Qin and painting.
I dedicate this work to all who cherish the art of the Guqin, are devoted to traditional Chinese music, and are inspired by the intellectual life of scholars. May this dialogue between ink and strings share a moment of tranquility and depth with those who hold the beauty of the East in their hearts.
