Chinese brush painting (sumi-e), painted by myself in Brighton, UK
🌸 A gift of timeless love, painted in ink.
This delicate ink-wash lily was created for a client who will bring it all the way to Australia as a wedding present for a newly married couple.
To accompany the painting, I added a piece of traditional calligraphy with the blessing:
“百年好合，琴瑟和鸣。”
(Bǎinián hǎo hé, qínsè hé míng.)
This beautiful verse wishes the couple “a harmonious union lasting a hundred years, like the perfect duet of the qin and se”—two ancient Chinese instruments symbolizing marital harmony.
It comes from the 《诗经》 (Shījīng), also known as the Book of Songs—one of China’s oldest collections of poetry, compiled nearly 3,000 years ago. These poems were not just literary works; they expressed values, rituals, and heartfelt blessings that continue to inspire today.
There’s something deeply meaningful about blending classical art with modern moments of love and celebration. 💕
