This painting was created as a demonstration piece for my Chinese New Year – Year of the Wood Snake painting workshop.
An original Chinese brush painting (sumi-e), hand-painted in Brighton, UK, featuring plum blossoms and a bright full moon, symbols of harmony and renewal.
Symbolism & Cultural Significance
In Chinese tradition, the five petals of a plum blossom represent the Five Blessings (五福, Wufu):
- Fu (福): Good luck
- Lu (禄): Fortune
- Shou (寿): Longevity
- Xi (喜): Joy
- Cai (财): Wealth
This piece is inspired by the Lantern Festival (元宵节), marking the first full moon of the new lunar year—a time for peace, reunion, and new beginnings. The calligraphy in Lishu script reads:
"花好月圆" – May the flowers always bloom, the moon always be full, and our loved ones stay well and live long.
