Original Chinese Brush Painting – 2025 Spring Collection
Created in the spring of 2025 in Fiveways, Brighton, Magnolia in Spring Dawn is part of my seasonal collection celebrating the beauty of magnolias through traditional Chinese brush painting. This piece was inspired by the magnificent magnolia trees in the walled garden of Preston Park, where their quiet splendour unfurls with each early spring. I often take peaceful strolls through the garden, pausing to admire their fleeting beauty—a ritual that inspired this painting.
Using a combination of mogu (boneless) and meticulous brushwork, I sought to capture the gentle curves and translucent quality of magnolia petals. Painted on raw Xuan paper in the soft morning light of my home studio, the process became a meditative reflection on spring’s quiet renewal. Once complete, the painting was professionally wet-mounted onto mulberry paper to ensure its preservation and presentation.
In Chinese culture, purple magnolias (紫玉蘭) symbolise elegance, purity, and noble character—qualities that I hoped to convey in both form and feeling.
This piece received warm praise during the May 2025 Artists Open Houses (AOH), appreciated for its grace, craftsmanship, and serene atmosphere.
