Chinese brush painting (sumi-e) in Brighton, UK.
This is an original Chinese painting, also known as sumi-e art, depicting an orchid and a blue bird. It has been hand-painted on double Xuan rice paper backed on silk scroll using freshly ground natural ink and mineral pigments.
Signed, dated, and stamped with stone seals carved by myself. One seal bears my name, another conveys best wishes, and the third depicts meditation. This artwork was created in my home studio, Plum Blossom Ink Art.
In traditional Chinese culture, the orchid represents good taste and beauty. Simple and elegant, its fragrance is never overpowering, symbolizing humility and nobility. A good friend may be called an 'orchid' friend, as a reference to the orchid's enduring beauty and understated elegance.
Confucius admired the orchid and wrote poems about it. Later, the famous Han Yu wrote a well-known poem to honor Confucius, titled "Orchid" or "You Lan Cao" 幽兰操.
I have named this painting after the first sentence from Han Yu's poem, "Orchid."
Inspired by the poem "Orchid" by Han Yu (768–824):
兰之猗猗，扬扬其香。 Slender, slender is the orchid, gently, gently grace the land. 众香拱之，幽幽其芳。 Of all flora, she excels, her scents so lightly unfold. 不采而佩，于兰何伤？ If no one recognizes her beauty, why should she be so hurt? 以日以年，我行四方。 For days and years, I have roamed the world alone. 文王梦熊，渭水泱泱。 Recalling how the King of Zhou found his sage by the River Wei. 采而佩之，奕奕清芳。 The orchid was so happily honored, with so much fragrance and pride. 雪霜茂茂，蕾蕾於冬， Heavy frost, followed by deep snow, 'tis here the orchid buds quietly bred. 君子之守，子孙之昌。 Virtuous as I am, I walk alone, hoping one day the posterity shall know.
