Spring Melody on Wings (戲春) – Original Chinese Brush Painting
This piece was created as a demonstration for my Spring Melody on Wings workshop. To study wisteria closely, I planted a vine in our garden three years ago. It now blooms joyfully each spring, just like the many wisterias you’ll see across Brighton in April and May.
In Chinese symbolism, wisteria represents unity and renewal—its purple blossoms are linked to Purple Qi from the East (紫氣東來), a sign of good fortune. The Tang dynasty poet Li Bai (李白)described wisteria’s charm as so fragrant and graceful that it drew admiration from all who passed. Swallows, which return with the spring, are often paired with wisteria in Chinese art, symbolising the season’s joyful energy.
The calligraphy in clerical script reads “戲春” (Playing in the Springtime), adding a poetic, cultural layer to the composition.
