Join artist Jing Wang for a peaceful afternoon discovering the elegant world of traditional Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy. This foundational masterclass offers a unique opportunity to learn directly inside Jing’s solo exhibition, Echoes of the Tides, providing an immersive, inspiring backdrop of paintings and calligraphic works as you create. [1]
In this intimate 2-hour session, you can focus entirely on mastering expressive brush strokes, or combine calligraphy with brush painting to celebrate spontaneity and the beauty of nature. Jing will introduce you to the "Four Treasures of the Scholar's Studio" (the brush, inkstick, inkstone, and Xuan rice paper) and guide you in bamboo brush manipulation.
What you will explore:
- Calligraphy Practice: Learn the core techniques to control ink, pressure, and flow to create elegant, traditional Chinese script characters.
- Landscape Techniques: Practice fundamental strokes to depict a breath-taking local landscape inspired by the Sussex coast or wild grass and daisies blooming across the South Downs.
- Creative Freedom: Bring your techniques together to compose your very own finished calligraphy script or landscape painting on fine rice paper to take home.
All tools and materials are provided, including premium Chinese ink, natural brushes, and authentic Xuan paper. No prior art or writing background is required—this workshop is designed for complete beginners and anyone looking to cultivate creative mindfulness. Enjoy authentic Chinese tea, snacks, and light refreshments as you paint!
To ensure plenty of one-on-one guidance and a relaxed atmosphere, places are strictly limited to 8 people. Early booking is highly recommended.
