In celebration of the Year of the Wood Dragon in 2024, I designed and ran a workshop to teach the art of painting a Chinese ink dragon. Dragons are intricate and detailed, so I created this design in simplified steps to make it both enjoyable and accessible for my students. The resulting blue dragon exudes vibrant energy. To highlight the dragon's association with wood and the early spring season, I incorporated plum blossoms, which are in bloom during this time.
Unlike the fire-breathing monsters of Western lore, the Chinese dragon is considered benevolent and possesses magical powers. It symbolizes wisdom, power, courage, confidence, and adventurousness, and it is seen as a harbinger of success and ambition.
Materials:
- Medium: Chinese ink and mineral pigments on semi-treated Xuan rice paper (半生宣)
- Backing: Mounted on mulberry paper, and on white mount board
- Framing: Not framed, allowing you to select a frame of your choice

This piece was displayed at Venue 6, Delicious Delights, in the Fiveways Trail as part of the AOH Artists Exhibition during the Brighton Festival 2024. It received significant attention and is now available for purchase.
