Join artist Jing Wang for a peaceful and creative day learning the ancient art of Chinese seal stone carving (篆刻) — a treasured tradition that beautifully combines calligraphy, sculpture, and personal expression. This foundational masterclass offers a unique opportunity to learn directly inside Jing’s solo exhibition, Echoes of the Tides. Your workshop space will be completely surrounded by her latest collection of paintings and calligraphy, providing an inspiring, immersive backdrop as you create. This will be a lifetime skill!

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll discover the fascinating history and cultural meaning of Chinese name seals, traditionally used by scholars and artists to sign their works. Jing will guide you through the process of designing your own seal — from sketching and transferring your chosen characters, to safely carving them into soft stone using traditional tools.

You’ll learn about different seal script styles (篆书) and explore the aesthetic balance between form and empty space that makes each seal unique. Step by step, you’ll carve your own personalised name seal to take home — ready to use for stamping your paintings, calligraphy, or letters.

All tools and materials are provided, including high-quality seal stones, carving knives, and red cinnabar paste. No previous experience is needed — this workshop welcomes both complete beginners and experienced artists who wish to deepen their understanding of Chinese art traditions.

If you don’t already have a Chinese name, Jing can help you create one with meaningful characters as your name seal or your artist seal.
