Join artist Jing Wang for a peaceful and creative day learning the ancient art of Chinese seal stone carving (篆刻) — a treasured tradition that beautifully combines calligraphy, sculpture, and personal expression. This will be a life time skill!
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll discover the fascinating history and cultural meaning of Chinese name seals, traditionally used by scholars and artists to sign their works. Jing will guide you through the process of designing your own seal — from sketching and transferring your chosen characters, to safely carving them into soft stone using traditional tools.
You’ll learn about different seal script styles (篆书) and explore the aesthetic balance between form and empty space that makes each seal unique. Step by step, you’ll carve your own personalised name seal to take home — ready to use for stamping your paintings, calligraphy, or letters.
All tools and materials are provided, including high-quality seal stones, carving knives, and red cinnabar paste. No previous experience is needed — this workshop welcomes both complete beginners and experienced artists who wish to deepen their understanding of Chinese art traditions.
If you don’t already have a Chinese name, Jing can help you create one with meaningful characters — or you can carve the initials of your English name instead.
