Composer: Ruan Ji (210–263), poet and one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. 竹林七賢之一
The Music's Spirit: The piece uses sudden tempo changes and bold rhythms to portray the erratic movements and emotional release of a drunkard.
Deeper Meaning: For Ruan Ji, this was not about drunkenness alone, but a form of spiritual protest and a desire to break free from strict societal obligations through the transcendence of wine and music.
