Elegant Magnolia
Original Chinese Brush Painting – 2025 Botanical Collection
Created in spring 2025 in Fiveways, Brighton, England, this piece is part of my new collection celebrating magnolias through traditional Chinese ink painting. It was inspired by the magnificent magnolia trees in the walled garden of our local Preston Park, which bloom with quiet splendour each year.
Using a blend of mogu (boneless) and meticulous brush techniques, I aimed to capture the delicate transparency and graceful curves of the magnolia leaves. Painted on raw Xuan paper in the soft, natural light of my home studio, the process became a quiet meditation on the season's gentle renewal. Once fully dried, the piece was carefully wet-mounted onto mulberry paper to preserve and present it beautifully.
In Chinese culture, purple magnolias (紫玉蘭) are often associated with elegance, purity, and a refined beauty—symbolising noble and graceful character.
This artwork received warm feedback during this year’s May Artists Open Houses (AOH), admired for its elegance, skilled craftsmanship, and tranquil atmosphere.
