Introduction to Chinese Brush Painting workshop

Join artist Jing Wang for a peaceful morning discovering the elegant world of traditional Chinese Brush Painting (国画 - Guóhuà). This foundational masterclass offers a unique opportunity to learn directly inside Jing’s solo exhibition, Echoes of the Tides. Your workshop space will be completely surrounded by her latest collection of paintings and calligraphy, providing an inspiring, immersive backdrop as you create.

In this 2-hour session, you will explore a timeless art form that celebrates spontaneity, brush control, and the beauty of nature. You will learn the core philosophy of Chinese painting, which seeks to capture the spirit and essence of a subject rather than just its realistic appearance. Jing will introduce you to the "Four Treasures of the Scholar's Studio" (the brush, inkstick, inkstone, and Xuan rice paper) and show you how to properly hold and manipulate the bamboo brush. 

Step-by-step, you will practice the fundamental strokes used to depict classical seasonal subjects, such as elegant bamboo or the wild daisies blooming across the South Downs. By the end of the workshop, you will bring these techniques together to compose your very own finished painting on fine rice paper to take home.

All tools and materials are provided, including premium Chinese ink, natural brushes, and authentic Xuan paper. No prior art background or drawing skills are required—this workshop is designed specifically for complete beginners and anyone looking to cultivate creative mindfulness.
