Ode to the Plum Blossom - Chinese Brush Painting

Artist: Jing
Location: Brighton, UK

Description:

Inspired by the evening plum blossoms I saw at the school where I teach early this spring, I created this painting. It also features calligraphy of a poem by the Song dynasty literati, Lin Bu:

"Alone you bloom while other flowers fade away,
In my small garden, none with your charm can sway.
Your slanted shadows rest upon the clear stream,
And your faint fragrance drifts in the dusky moonlight’s gleam."

一直都喜欢林逋的《山园小梅》,总觉得好美。今天便再次将这句千古咏梅绝唱配与此画。”疏影横斜水清浅,暗香浮动月黄昏!”

In Chinese art, the "Four Gentlemen" refers to four plants: the plum blossom, the orchid, the bamboo, and the chrysanthemum. These plants are likened to Confucian junzi, or "gentlemen," who embody high moral and ethical standards.

Materials:

  • Medium: Chinese ink and mineral pigments on untreated Xuan rice paper (生宣)
  • Backing: Mounted on mulberry paper
  • Framing: Bespoke in oak by local frame maker Tim

Details:

  • Original Artwork: This is not a print or reproduction, but a unique, hand-painted piece.
  • Dimensions of Original Art: 40.5cm x 40.5cm (16" x 16")
  • Dimensions in Frame: 57cm x 57cm (22.5" x 22.5")

Features:

  • Signed, dated, and stamped with stone seals carved by myself. Two seals on the left bottom bears my name, the one on top is one plum blossom, and the one at the bottom right represents meditation.
  • Created using traditional calligraphy strokes with a back wash to create the background of dusky moonlight.
