Owls in Ink, with the auspicious phrase "Da Jixiang" in Calligraphy

This original Chinese ink painting is part of my 2025 Bird Collection, exploring the expressive power of bold calligraphic brushstrokes to portray owls with character and spirit. Each owl is painted on carefully selected Xuan rice paper, allowing the ink to respond uniquely to the surface and create subtle variations in texture and tone.
Painted beside the window in the sunlit calm of my new studio at 19a Gallery, the process was deeply meditative. After the painting had fully dried, the work was traditionally wet-mounted onto Xuan rice paper, preserving its structure and enhancing its longevity and presentation.
Centered a wise, serene owl and anchored by the bold calligraphy “大吉祥” (Dà Jíxiáng)—meaning Great Luck and Prosperity—this piece is a wish for your home. It’s a hope for harmony, good fortune, and the deep, quiet joy of shared moments.
In Chinese culture, and particularly in Feng Shui, owls symbolise wisdom, intelligence, and knowledge. They are also regarded as protectors and guardians, believed to safeguard the home from negative energy and unhappiness.
